WHYZDOM, a captivating first EP !

Who said that frenchies couldn't produce good symphonic metal stuff ?

Of course, for many, french metal success comes exclusively from the extreme branch, via excellent bands like Gojira, Dagoba or Zuul FX... But they forget that our good ol' country is full of excellent melodic bands, like Heavenly, Manigance, Fairyland or Adagio. But this is not the end of the story !... In this beginning of 2008, a brand new band has been revealed, that will surely meet success : Whyzdom !

In a few words, what is Whyzdom ? If we wanted to be direct, we could answer "female fronted symphonic metal"... but, though it is indeed the style of this band, it wouldn't be wrong to state that Whyzdom is much more thant these simple words.

Navigating between different influences, as well musical as cinematographic, passing from a musical magic (reminding us of the best hours of Therion) to the soft imparable arrangements of a music created with precision by a classical conductor, this new combo based near Paris, has directly succeeded in imposing a personal touch to a style , that has tended to stagnate for some years.

Exit then, the references to Nightwish or other Within Temptation. This could look surprising, while reading that Whyzdom is a "female fronted metal symphonic" band ... but it is indeed not as we listen carefully their first EP, full of treasures, mixing with brio symphonic, gothic, celtic (and even extreme at times) influences.

After having listened to the 4 songs, my first reaction was : "What ? Alrady the end ! Ah, yes, it is an EP only... OK, I want the album now ! Quickly !". This EP is a quasi-frustrating preview of Whyzdom music, simply because it makes us want more !

Or, passée cette frustration aussi bien légitime qu'illégitime selon le point de vue que l'on adopte, on trouve matière à dire en réécoutant cet EP à plusieurs reprises, chaque écoute apportant son lot de découvertes tant les arrangements sont précis et élaborés, telle la bande son d'un film hollywoodien. D'ailleurs, si on décortique le mixage en général, il n'y a pas grand chose à redire tant la production est d'un professionalisme percutant. Tous les instruments ou autres voix et choeurs se marient en harmonie quasi parfaite.

Parlons plus précisément du chant qui m'a agréablement surpris et touché, celui ci étant fort bien maîtrisé par une Telya Melane très convaincante et percutante dans un registre qui n'a pas grand chose à voir avec 80% des chanteuses metal du genre, ceci étant probablement l'un des points forts du groupe. On pourrait d'ailleurs rapprocher le chant de Telya à celui d'Eilera, autre excellente jeune chanteuse de la scène metal française, avec ce petit côté parfois torturé voire folk qui donne encore plus de corps aux différentes compos.

En ce qui concerne les instruments styles guitares-basses-batterie, il n'y a absolument rien à redire, chaque musicien semblant parfaitement à l'aise, insufflant ainsi énergie et musicalité dans un metal parfois brut mais toujours mélodique.

Tout ceci étant donc contrebalancé et équilibré par un exceptionnel travail d'orchestration qui montre une très grande maîtrise de l'outil production par le guitariste mais aussi "chef d'orchestre" Vynce Leff. Tout ceci nous rappelant donc les suédois de Therion comme je l'ai mentionné plus haut, plaçant ainsi directement Whyzdom dans les très hautes sphères de la scène metal mélodique française.

Voici donc un EP surprenant, presque inattendu, comme venu de nulle part, accrocheur et professionnel à souhait, travaillé et peaufiné dans les moindres détails. Whyzdom a véritablement tout d'un futur grand groupe, j'en veux pour preuve les chansons "The Witness" ou "Daughter of the Night", en écoute sur leur myspace ou sur leur site, qui allient accroche mélodique et structures élaborées. Si j'étais vous, je m'y préciterais au plus vite afin de découvrir cet excellent travail.

Difficile au final de dégager une note tant il est fort complexe de noter un simple EP... Je ne vais d'ailleurs pas même m'y risquer, précisant juste qu'il place la barre très haute pour un premier album qu'on attend désormais avec une impatience non contenue. Et si Whyzdom devenait ce grand groupe de metal symphonique dont la France a besoin ? Personnellement j'y crois, croisons ainsi les doigts pour que rien ne stoppe la progression du sextète parisien...
